As an American married to an Australian we are presently in Australia. There are not many boxes here, so I am going to do a series on things I love about Australia. This is the first in the series.

In the late 1980's my husband and I began dating in the very romantic city of Sydney. We would sometimes take the ferry from the Sydney harbor over to Manly, walk down the Corso and have ice cream, then go home.

So in order to honor our relationship some 25 years later, here is the carved stamp "Manly Ice Cream".

Make sure you take at least a light jacket, then take the Manly Ferry or Jet Cat from Circular Quay to Manly. Walk through the shops and various eating places to the sidewalk outside. Take a left (do not cross the street) and walk along the ocean on the "Manly Pathway of Olympians and Paralympians". Walk toward OceanWorld and the Manly Musuem of Arts. Notice the names and dates of champions from 1900-2004 (when this box was placed in 2008) on plaques along the walkway.

When you reach the THIRD plaque of Kerri Pottharst Beach Volleyball Athens 2004, then follow the path to your right (away from Ocean World) on the 9 km Manly Scenic Walkway. (You can see the letterbox hiding place from this spot.)

Notice the high rock retaining wall on which the road is built. Your prize awaits you in the this wall. Walk to the back of the garden, behind the hedge that runs close to the wall. When you reach an iron rod that is close to the road (obviously above your head) that is about 1 1/2 feet tall, look for a hole about waist level that has an old root and a rock covering the opening, there "Manly Ice Cream" awaits.

This can be a very public place and unfortunately our experience with Australian letterboxes are that they are often "muggled", so please use care while stamping.

The first finder will find a HitchHiker "Pear" to be taken along with them to be hidden elsewhere.

Thanks . . . and take the time to enjoy some real ice cream.

PS Make sure to bring your own ink pad, as there is not one in this box.
