...a Pirate's life for me.

Cap’n Maggie’s ship, the Black Pearl, had been in the Bermuda waters back in June and at that time the crew even boarded the Norwegian Dawn cruise line for a short time to meet the passengers on the first ever letterboxing cruise – a Pinecone adventure. (Letterboxers may have been pirates in a previous life as they also love to seek treasure, but of a different type.) Since then, Maggie’s crew slowly made their way up the eastern coast of North America in a northerly direction pillaging and plundering as they went. One day, they just decided that they were bored with their bad “Pirate ways” and decided to convert to a clean life.

It was just past sunrise and Cap’n Maggie woke up with a jolt. The ship was rocking back and forth in a most curious fashion. “Sink me, t’ boat most have run aground durin’ t’ night!” She got up and hurried to the deck and found that none of the crew were to be found. The previous evening had been a rough one – what with drinking and gambling all night long. Maggie looked over the bow of her ship and saw that they ended up in a small cove. “All hands on deck!” she yelled and started hearing commotion below. Within a minute or two, the entire crew appeared, cursin’ under their breath. Cap’n Jack Sparrow walked up to Maggie and gave her a big hug. “Ahoy, my Bonnie Lass, we made it!”

“Take as much supplies as ye can carry and don’t forget t’ booty!” They all scrambled off the Pearl and looked to Maggie to see what direction they would head. Way up hill in the distance she saw a pipe about 3 feet high and a bench overlooking the cove. She also heard strange animal sounds in that direction and decided that was the area they should explore. If you would like to follow on their adventure, you need to take the upper vista trail to the overlook looking towards the cove where the Black Pearl is moored and said landmarks mentioned.

After their long bushwhacking scramble, Polly became quite flustered and cried, “Polly wants a cocktail!” They reached the bench, panting and achy from the weight of the treasure chest and collapsed. You might find Polly passed out from all that drinking at 290 degrees from the bench to the east side of the wall in front of a three sister tree.

After a bit of a rest, the buccaneers followed a trail and took a left at the intersection and continued along until they reached a picnic table on their right – up a small incline. From here they had a nice view of the river and a carriage road that went in a circle. They were parched and realized that Polly had a great idea earlier, so they broke out their rum and spent several hours drinking at the picnic table, reminiscing about their time spent in the warm southern waters. In the meantime, Cap’n Jack went to explore this curious circular carriage road and found some stone steps. From there, 120 degrees to two sister tree, you’ll find evidence of one of his profound beliefs behind it.

When all the rum was gone, they staggered west on the trail. Eventually they came to an open area and another view on their left with a picnic table. They were quite tired from carrying their heavy treasure chest and the previous drinking didn’t help either. The picnic table looked inviting so they decided to stop. “Pirate Pete and his pumpkin patch” took out a deck of cards and they proceeded to play some poker to pass the time. Suddenly a southerly gust of wind came up from the river and blew all the cards off the table. They followed the trail north, picking up all the cards that were strewn about and found all but one by the time they reached the pond on the right. If you look due east from the pond, you might find the missing card in the roots of a “right leaning” tree.

Back at the pond, they continued and took a right at the next intersection, eventually passing some ledges on the left. Taking notice of an eight to ten foot stump on the right opposite an evergreen tree and within a few steps there appeared to be a narrow trail to the left. (If you’ve gotten to house, you’ve gone too far.) “This way, Mateys, smartly now!” They all shuffled down that trail and through a stone wall passing a trail to the left.

The terrain here was quite unlike any they had ever seen before and the weight of their treasure was becoming unbearable, even maddening. “Need to burying t’ treasure, Cap’n! Can’t carry it much longer,” the crew cried as they took turns lugging it with them. At the “T” intersection they went left and bypassed trails on the right then continuing uphill, grunting as they went. Finally the trail leveled off and suddenly it went steeply downhill. Their backs were breaking as they struggled down the hill, sliding a bit with the weight. Just before reaching the water they came to a perfect spot on the right to burying the treasure. Look for the large rock on the right. You’ll see a tree that has a large burl on it. Look under the small burl, but don’t get caught! Pirates don’t take well to someone stealing their treasure!

When they got to the water, they went right following along the water’s edge. They were amazed to see small houses built into the hills on the other side of the river. They continued straight through the open area to where the trail continued on. When they got to the wooden gate they saw a large building ahead. Not wanting to draw attention to themselves, they immediately turned right after exiting the gate.

They stayed on this trail and eventually came to a “Y” intersection. Staying to the left of the “Y” they then came to a “T” intersection. At this point Cap’n Maggie had heard enough complaining, especially from Pirate Pete. “Me feet be aching, me back be aching, can’t go no further, sleep! Need sleep!” She wasn’t quite sure if he was trying to fool the crew and perhaps sneak back to steal the treasure they had hidden. Exasperated she screamed, “Avast! Get ‘ye some rest over thar. We’ll send L’il Peg Leg Polly back to find ye in a bit so ye can catch up with us. I be placin' the black spot markin' ye death if ye be lyin’ about restin’. From that “T” intersection he went 16 paces back the way he came, looked left to a multi trunk cedar and found the best spot to rest his weary head.

Cap’n Maggie decided to go left at the “T” intersection and continue on with the rest of her crew. Upon reaching another intersection they all went right. Maggie was getting worried about her decision to let Pirate Pete separate from the group. Even though they took an oath that they would clean up their ways, she couldn’t help being suspicious. Before they reached the stone wall they saw a trail to the right going uphill. She asked the crew to wait here then she and the bird took that trail to the right and started up the hill. “Keep ye eyes on Pirate Pete an’ make sure he don’t sneak off and steal t’ treasure,” Maggie whispered to L’il Peg Leg Polly. “If ye see anythin’ suspicious, ye come quick!” They came to a hard left and took 20 steps back, then looking due south to a hemlock with its mouth opened. The bird flew to where rock and tree meet.

Maggie walked back to her crew down at the “T” feeling a bit relieved. She turned right and then through the stone wall, everyone trailing behind her. When they reached the next intersection she decided to go left. This trail will turn sharply right. At that point, they all stopped where there was a multi trunk hemlock and a cedar hugging it.

“Maggie, they be strange noises here an’ this land be stranger. Restin’ me weary head be t’ best grog right now. Mayhaps it’s all in me head,” Captain Jack whispered. She agreed about the noises. She was quite sure that there were unexplained sounds during their time in this land, but she didn’t want to stop just yet as there were still several hours of daylight left. She totally trusted Jack and knew he wouldn’t betray her. “Aye, me love, rest. We be settin’ up camp further on an’ ye kin join us later,” she replied.

****Capt'n Jack Sparrow is out for repair effective 2/21/18. I will remove this note once it's been replaced. ***
At the multi trunk trees, take a reading of 250 degrees to a stone wall and look in front of a big tree at the wall for where Capt’n Jack Sparrow may still be sleeping soundly. Now continue in the direction you were going to reach your car.
