Difficulty: Strenuous
The bear went over the mountain to see what (s)he could see. This letterbox is near the top of a bare topped mountain in the Holyoke Range.
Directions to starting location:
Take Route 116 south from Amherst toward the Notch in the Holyoke Range. Park on the left at the Notch Visitor Center parking lot. Cross the road and follow the white blazed M& M trail to the top.
When you reach the summit of the mountain enjoy the views of Hampshire College, UMASS, the Peace Pagoda, Mt. Warner and the whole Pocumtuk Ridge to the north. On ledges to the south the southern Pioneer Valley is revealed.
To find the letterbox, continue on the M&M trail west toward the direction of the Summit House (direction is painted on the rock near the summit). After the first downhill off the summit where the path flattens out again, look to the north for a large solitary boulder between a beautifully spreading oak tree and a large cedar tree. The letterbox is under the north facing side of this large boulder. Stamp discretely and re-hide carefully. Bring stamp pad and pen.
