STRATEGO CHALLENGE AT BEAR LAKE Letterbox

Created and Placed by: Moo Poo & The Real Truth
4 Hand-Carved Stamps
Day-Use Fee of $1 per person
Total Hiking Distance: 1.2 miles roundtrip

While camping in Bear Lake Recreation Area, Moo Poo and The Real Truth enjoyed playing the Milton Bradley game, Stratego. In commemoration to a great game, we decided to carve 4 stamps, each one representing a piece in the game. Since we didn't have enough materials to make every piece, we chose our four favorites, Marshal, Spy, Miner, and Bomb. If you have played the game, you should be familiar with the concept that the Marshal can only be eliminated by the Spy, and the Bomb can only be eliminated by the Miner.

Directions to Bear Lake Recreation Area:
From I-10, take the Avalon Boulevard Exit (Exit 22). Follow Avalon Boulevard to US 90. Take a right and continue to Burger King. Take a left at Stuart Street (Hwy 87). Go to Milton High School. Take a right across from Milton High School on Hwy 191. Follow for approximately 20 miles to Munson crossroads (Hwy 191 and SR 4). Take a right on SR 4 and continue for 2.5 miles to the Bear Lake Recreation Area sign. Go to kiosk in campground (in front of bathrooms) and find a parking spot.

Clues:
Box 1 -
1) Starting at the kiosk, walk west along the campsites on the small paved road.
2) At campsites, 9, 10, and 11, you can see there is a grassy earthen levee on the west side of the lake.
3) Walk across the levee (just before you walk across, you'll pass two wooden posts with yellow "Pedestrian Only" signs) and take a left to get onto the Sweetwater Trail.
4) Follow the trail until you come to the first bench.
5) While sitting on the bench, you'll notice a pine tree on your left. Stand beside this pine tree facing the same direction as you would if you were sitting on the bench.
6) You'll notice a large downed tree south of the trail. Take about 15 steps south to the downed tree.
7) The first box is hidden under one of the branches of the dead tree. This box doesn't have a journal, just the two stamps. Stamp these in your book and continue to the next box. You are very close to the main trail and still quite visible.
Box 2 -
1) Get back onto the trail, and continue on it until you get to the second bench on the trail.
2) Stand behind the bench, with your back to the trail and take 7 steps to a medium sized oak tree (slightly northeast) from the bench.
3) From this oak, take 6 steps to a stump that has a downed log beside it.
4) The box is hidden between the stump and the log, covered by small branches and bark. This box has the journal in it with two more stamps. Please be discreet. You are very close to the main trail and still quite visible.
5) You can continue on the Sweetwater Trail and it will take you to the Krul Recreation Area. The trail turns into a boardwalk and it takes you through some beautiful forest! You should enjoy the swimming and picnic area in Krul if you have the time!
