I consider myself a pretty fearless hiker. No mountain to high or trail to long. I do know my limitations. Today we were hiking on the AT west, past Bear Rocks. We reached a section that took you over a ridge of rocks. And by rocks, I mean boulders. A mountain of boulders with no way around them that we could find. The rocks were still snow covered and slippery. When we reached the top I could not see blazes, just more snow and slippery rocks. We sanely called it a day, as did a Dad and his son that we kept running into on the trail.

There is one time, though, this past October that we were hiking the AT that I was a Scaredy Cat. We were finally able to take a week’s vacation together and enjoyed many day adventures boxing together. We couldn’t go away because of the geriatric dog.

We were hiking the AT on this same stretch of trail between Route 309 and Bear Rocks that vacation. For some reason I got it set in my mind we were going to run into a bear on the trail as we were heading for the box. Maybe it was the yellow sign on 309 that read “Bear Crossing, Next 2 Miles” or the box we were seeking was about the family having to do a night hike escaping bears in the middle of the night while camping. Whatever, I was shaking like a leaf and the adrenal was pumping as we started off to find the box.

I made Black Swan take the lead and left my lunch in the car as a precaution so I did not end up as an appetizer for a hungry bear. Figuring that the bear would use Black Swan as a tooth pick and I could call for help. (Nice wife, huh).

As we hiked, I would sing and make noises (hard for the BS to differentiate between the two). He asked me to be quiet; he wanted to see a bear!!!

We found the box with no incidents or bear sightings. I was still shaking as we drove home. My fear was unfounded and never came to fruition. Silly Pink!

Today, as I sat on the rock bench on the next large rock formation past Bear Rocks I decided to lose that Scaredy Cat. I looked at the valley below through the pines and admired the pretty red barns and view of the valley below. I noticed a tree bent at a right angle before me with the initials ARG or something…

The large pine in front of the pancake rocks and right of the snag tree at 40* beckoned to me. So I climbed back down and spied a twisted “Y” pine at 330*. Just the spot for a Scaredy Cat. I left that Scaredy Cat and hope she never visits me again!

Notes:
1. BYOI-Black suggested.
2. Enjoy the hike, but wear blaze in hunting season.
3. You know the rest.
4. Well, at least Black Swan helped to find SPOR and a good hiding spot today. Love him for that.
5. Read the waiver stuff.
