This box was planted in honor of my friend who I was up visiting. She once found a black umbrella in the woods and thought maybe it once used to be a crow. Hence, Umbrella Crow.
This box is located in Holland Glen. Which is section 10 of the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail. I am from Connecticut and am unfamiliar with the area. My friend brought us here to share the wonderful trail with us. So my directions probably are not as good as they can be.
Holland Glen is located on Amherst Rd in between Pelham and Belchertown. Take Federal St. / Rt.9 to Amherst Rd. Holland Glen has a tiny dirt parking area with very small trail signs, it will be hard to see. If you are traveling from the south it will be on your right, from the north on your left.
To find the Umbrella Crow start off by taking the white blazed trail. There are two trail heads here. The one you want is on the right and has a single blaze on a tree. The trail follows a river and goes up a small incline. Be on the look out for when the trail crosses the river on your right. Take the crossing. Continue on the trail until you come to the first major cascade/waterfall. At the top of the cascade look for a large yellow birch with a rock tangled in it’s roots. About 10’ behind the birch is a large rock. Go to the rock and take 10 steps up hill to a hemlock with a flat rock at the base. Under this rock resides the Umbrella Crow.
Once you have found the Umbrella Crow take the time to explore the rest of Holland Glen. It is a truly lovely place with many nooks and crannies to explore. I planted this box at the end of November and would love to come back and see Holland Glen in the spring.
