HAPPY THANKSGIVING 2008!
Pink Lady® apples have a beautiful pink blush and a refreshing and sweet, champagne-like taste — making them the perfect apple.
Pink Lady comes from Australia, and is a cross between Golden Delicious and Lady Williams. Lady Williams is not a particularly well known apple variety in Europe, but has been quite widely grown in Australia, having been discovered as a chance seedling in the 1930s. It is probably from Lady Williams that Pink Lady gets its distinct colouring. It requires a very long growing period and a hot climate, and hence is only grown in the warmer apple-growing regions like the Arizona desert, South Africa, and southern Europe.
Lucky for you, you’re in Arizona and Apple Annie’s in Wilcox now grows Pink Lady Apples. Unfortunately, 2008 was a bad year for the apples as Annie’s lost 80% of their crop due to a late winter freeze. However, the apples that survived were delicious. I highly suggest making your own apples sauce, apple pie, or pick and eat if you get the change.
To the box: Follow I-10 to Exit 340. Head North on Ft. Grant Road for 6 miles to Nickles Road. Park in the dirt lot at the corner. Walk to the North_East corner of Nickels & Ft Grant Rd. Look for the “Visser Family Farm Grass Fed Lambs 3 Miles” sign. Just a few steps away from the sign at the corner of the green fence you’ll find the box located under some rocks and chunks of asphalt.
During September – November you can visit Apple Annie’s for locally grown produce it’s a great trip with kids. And if you’re lucky you can enjoy one of their pancake breakfasts or an Apple wood smoked burger for lunch.
