Here are the clues to our letter box. This is the Schmidtlet's very first box!
From Route 63, turn into Mill River Park. At the roundabout, go right and park near the river. From the parking lot, go east, between the baseball field. Cross the bridge and join the Julius Lester Trail, taking an immediate left after the bridge. Walk along for the trail for about 5 minutes. You should stop when you see all of the following: there will be houses ahead through the trees, a large stump that once was a hemlock on the right of the trail, and a side trail with a small, narrow footbridge to the right. At the hemlock stump turn about face and go 25 paces back, stopping at a large tree on your right. About 15 paces to the right of the trail is a fallen tree. The letter box jar is in the hollow in the roots of the fallen tree.
Please carefully replace the letter box when you are done. This is a highly used trail, so please make sure that the box is out of sight.
Notes:
1) repaired 6/29/2009
2) a small treasure jar has been added to the other end of the log
3) moved the letter box jar a little (and updated above directions) but did not relocate the treasure jar.
