This box made its first appearance at the WI Letterboxing 10th Anniversary Gathering held in Whitefish Dunes Park on October 4, 2008 and is now finding a permanent home.
Duration: 50 – 90 minutes
Terrain: Some 10 minutes of moraine climbing, otherwise flat.

Meeting at a school house in Ripon on February 28, 1854, some thirty opponents of the Nebraska Act called for the organization of a new political party and suggested that Republican would be the most appropriate name (to link their cause with the Declaration of Independence). The radicals also took a leading role in the creation of the Republican Party in many northern states during the summer of 1854. While conservatives and many moderates were content merely to call for the restoration of the Missouri Compromise or a prohibition of slavery extension, the radicals insisted that no further political compromise with slavery was possible. The February 1854 meeting was the first political meeting of the group that would become the Republican Party. This stamp was created to commemorate the link between Wisconsin and the party of Lincoln.
In your vehicle, enter a small lane with VERY limited parking. After debarking, locate the information kiosk. From the kiosk, head down the easement to a large map board. Head west from the map board, taking the blue trail (marked by a blue center and a white perimeter). Continue on this trail crossing a bridge until you reach a red dot on a tree on your right. This demarks a new trail for you to follow. Turn left and follow red dots up to the top of the ridge. This is where you will do a small amount of climbing. When at the top, look for a red arrow and a new trail marked by a red dot and a yellow perimeter.
Follow this trail south until you espy a fifteen foot tall snag on your right. From this snag, sight 190 degrees and take approximately thirty steps to a fallen log. Find the memorial about three feet from the log’s base underneath protected by leaves and bark.
To return, retrace your steps or continue down the trail south. The trail will roll a bit with some gully crossings and eventually descend downward with a fence in view. Continue heading east looking for the occasional red yellow marking (trail is not well marked) until you find a red/yellow trio. From there pick up the yellow dots on trees and follow them to the familiar blue/white combination. These will lead you back to the map board and eventually to the parking lane.
Note: In Spring I can see this trail being a muddy mess, so be prepared. But, the hike is not lengthy and the area is pretty.
