HISTORY: In the early 1900's it was determined that eastern Massachusetts was going to need a long term reliable source of water. Legislation was passed that called for the building of two large dams that would block the Swift River and flood most of the former towns of Dana, Greenwich, Enfield and Prescott.
Dana MA was one of the four towns that was lost in the creation of the Quabbin Reservoir. Unlike the other towns of the Quabbin, the center of Dana was never submerged and today remains a ghost town. The Town of Dana was incorporated on 18 February 1801 and was dissolved on 28 April 1938. Although the buildings have long since been removed the foundations, roads and even sidewalks remain for you to explore

CLUES:
From the south: Follow Rt32 north to 32A north. 32A is a left hand spur from the center of Gilbertville, MA. Follow 32A until you come to Gate40 on your left. It will be just past Glen Falls Rd on your right.
From the north: From the center of Petersham, MA, follow Rt32A south to Gate 40 on your right. This should be a few miles after Old Hardwick Rd on your left.
Park and be sure not to block the gate.
Walk through the gate and stay on the main paved path. As you walk down this road to the common of Dana, MA, be sure to check out the many cellar holes and foundations along your way. Once you make it to the center of town (approx a 2 mile hike.), stop at the granite marker at the vertex of the common. Stand with your right shoulder towards the marker and take a compass reading of 160*. Walk until you come to a pile of bricks on the top corner of a foundation. Look to your left and you will see part of a wall that resembles a skinny staircase. While standing on the top “step” take a reading of 50*. You will see twin sister trees. When you get to the other side of the twins from the stairs, rummage around in the short stone wall at the base of the twins to find what you seek.
Please re-hide well as this is a highly visited area.
Please….. because I don’t live near this location, maybe keep some extra letterboxing supplies with you.
LET ME KNOW HOW IT GOES!!! AND ENJOY!!!
