Scooter Boy Letterbox

Location: State: MA County: Barnstable Town: Orleans

Planted by: Tweety and Mr. Coon 6/25/03

Difficulty:
Easy. Flat 1.2 mile walk on the Cape Cod Rail Trail from the parking lot to the box.
or
Harder if you want to take a bike ride and do one or two other boxes we planted on the CCRT the same day; The Scooter Boy letterbox is at 1.2 miles north, The Triker letterbox at 5.6 miles north and The Tandem Mates letterbox at 12.5 miles north of the CCRT entrance from the Nickerson Park parking lot (and restrooms) by Tweety’s bike odometer.. The Wellfleet end of the CCRT is 13 miles north of Nickerson.

Driving directions:
To walk to the box: The entrance to Nickerson State Park is just south ( west ) of where The mid-Cape highway Route 6 crosses over Route 6A. There is a parking lot immediately to the right just inside the entrance. There is also an overflow parking lot for the Cape Cod Rail Trail a stones throw farther to the south (west) on Rt 6A.

To ride the Cape Cod Rail Trail:
There are a variety of places to park the car and take to the bike, skates, feet, wheelchair, scooter, etc. We usually park at Nickerson State Park. This is about the midpoint of the (now) approximately 25 mile long CCRT. If the lot here next to park entrance is full, there is an overflow lot a short distance south, in fact there is a bike rental place there.
Another good place to park is at what is ( as of this writing ) the north end of the CCRT in Wellfleet. This lot is just off Rt 6 at the start of LeCount Hollow Road which is just after Rt 6 crosses Blackfish Creek. The southern terminus of the CCRT is currently at Rt. 134 in Dennis. That’s about 11 miles or so south of Nickerson on the path. There are lots of other parking places at points where roads cross the CCRT.

Directions to the box:
Head north (well, its probably not really north right at this point, but toward the outer reaches of the Cape ) on the bike path out of one of the parking areas near the Nickerson Park entrance. At about 1.2 miles by our measurement you will see a boulder with a plaque commemorating this Orleans Conservation Trust property as memorial to George D.Hofe on your left. Stand before the rock and read the inscription, then turn around with your back to it and look across the trail to a triple- trunked oak tree six or eight feet off the trail. The box is nestled among the bases of the trunks.
