The Triker Letterbox

Location: State: MA County: Barnstable Town: Orleans

Planted by: Tweety and Mr. Coon 6-25-03

Difficulty:
Easy walk of a couple of hundred yards or a bike ride of variable length
or
Harder if you want to take a bike ride and do one or two other boxes we planted on the CCRT the same day; The Scooter Boy letterbox is at 1.2 miles north, The Triker letterbox at 5.6 miles north and The Tandem Mates letterbox at 12.5 miles north of the CCRT entrance from the Nickerson Park parking lot (and restrooms) by Tweety’s bike odometer. The Wellfleet end of the CCRT is 13 miles north of Nickerson.

Driving directions:
To park a short walk from the box:
Follow Route 6 ( the Mid-Cape Highway ) to the Orleans rotary and pass up the first two exits from the rotary ( the first goes into Orleans center , the second is the continuation of Rt 6) and take the third exit from the rotary which comes immediately to Rock Harbor Rd. Look for a parking area next to the new bike path bridge. If you haven’t been down this road before, you might want to drive a mile or so along this road to Rock Harbor. There is a fleet of sport fishing boats here and an interesting harbor entrance whose channel across an impressive expanse of flats exposed at the lowest of tides is indicated by the strangest markers.

To ride the Cape Cod Rail Trail:
There are a variety of places to park the car and take to the bike, skates, feet, wheelchair, scooter, etc. We usually park at Nickerson State Park. This is about the midpoint of the (now) approximately 25 mile long CCRT. If the lot here next to park entrance is full, there is an overflow lot a short distance south, in fact there is a bike rental place there.
Another good place to park is at what is (as of this writing) the north end of the CCRT in Wellfleet. This lot is just off Rt 6 at the start of LeCount Hollow Road which is just after Rt 6 crosses Blackfish Creek. The southern terminus of the CCRT is currently at Rt. 134 in Dennis. That’s about 11 miles or so south of Nickerson on the path. There are lots of other parking places at points where roads cross the CCRT.

Background:
This Boatmeadow Creek isn’t much in size, but it has played a role in American history. It has been open to the sea on the ocean side of the Cape at some times, thus making the Cape beyond this point an island in a sense, and closed off at others due to the dynamics of marine shoreline processes. Local lore has it that during the War of 1812 it was opened up by shoveling to allow ships to offload cargo into rowboats to move the materials over to the Wellfleet side of the Cape to avoid the British warships blockading Cape Cod Bay. ( no Cape Cod Canal at that time)

Directions to the box:
From Rock Harbor Rd. – Walk up the ramp to the Cape Cod Rail Trail and turn left on it. A right turn will send you up the new bridge that spans both Rt 6 and Rock Harbor Rd, you might want to check the view, a perspective that seems very novel to us after riding on this bike path for many years. Head northward on the trail from the north end of the bridge. After a very short distance of several hundred yards or so the bike trail crosses Boatmeadow Creek. A couple of hundred feet later there is a clearing on the left (west side of the trail) overlooking the marsh and a sign explaining the restoration project and new culvert. After reading the sign look to the right of the sign for a large healthy (when we were there it was loaded with those juniper “berries” that are used to flavor gin) red cedar tree ( Juniperus virginiana ). The box is underneath it behind some clumps of sod.
