Easy Walk

The Lowell Guard Locks designed by Francis in 1840 and built in 1850 these locks were designed to keep flood waters back on the canal to prevent the city from flooding. So Francis designed a 27 foot tall, 25 foot long, 21 ton gate made of Georgia Pine and treated with a zinc compound to prevent it from rotting. On April 22, 1852 these gates were put to the test when the city was in jeopardy of being flooded, but a 3:15am the iron shackle holding the gate in place was shattered and thus the city was saved. The gate was dropped again in 1936 and remained dropped until being raise in 1950, 14 years later. And once more in was dropped in 2006 only this time a new gate was dropped made of steel beams similar to the gate James Francis created 150 years earlier.
