12/2/11 This box was damaged when road work was done recently. It got very wet, but someone let us know and it is back in place with a new book. This is easy....a very short walk from the parking lot.

Where were you September 11, 2001? We had left when I got off work on the 10th and were on I 40 headed for Kalamazoo, Michigan and the Street Rod Nationals North. Jim usually takes the first shift so I was driving by then. I could hardly believe, let alone imagine what I was hearing. My first thought was firefighters walking up all those flights of stairs hauling so much equipment. Then when the towers collapsed. Our lives were changed forever.
To get to our letterbox “Lest We Forget” from I-17 head for Cottonwood via Hwy 260. When you get to the 89A intersection, (Sizzler, Giant gas station) turn LEFT. Follow this around about ½ mile to the next light and turn LEFT, There are signs for West 89A to Clarkdale, Jerome and Prescott. (Walgreen’s and two banks at this corner) Take this road through stoplights at 12th, 6th, Willard, and at the stoplight at Mingus Ave. (Maverik gas station) turn LEFT up the hill. Go about ½ mile to Yavapai College Verde Fire Training Center, on the right.

From Jerome:
Come down the hill from Jerome to the intersection of West 89A. It will be the first of 5 traffic circles (roundabouts) as you go toward Cottonwood. The fifth circle is Black Hills Drive, go through this roundabout and continue to the light at Mingus Ave. Turn RIGHT up the hill. Go about ½ mile to Yavapai College Verde Fire Training Center Building and Classrooms, on the right. At this location, all Verde Valley Fire agencies do their hot fire training.(see the blackened structure in the fenced area. It was built many years ago by cooperative efforts of all agencies.

Park in their parking lot. At the base of the flagpole find the 9/11 Memorial from a piece of the World Trade Center, 3000 civilians and 343 firefighters were killed. “Lest We Forget”
Walk down the hill to the closest street. Happy Jack Way, cross the street, go LEFT to the old fence post with some yellow paint on it. Facing the post, to your right, there is a very large rock. Behind the rock, hidden among smaller rocks, carefully look for the box. Please be discreet.
We would love to hear from you via e-mail.
