This box is located on the C&O Canal Trail along the beautiful Potomac River in Hancock, MD. At the Sheetz in Hancock, go east on Main Street until you see a cute little park on the right. There is a parking lot here where you will start your quest. There is no parking fee here so we highly recommend it! There are also picnic tables in the park where you can have a picnic after your short hike.
Start by going up the stairs to the trail entrance, then turn left on the Western Md Rail Trail. This is a paved trail and is gorgeous at any time of the year. Immediately you will see three cement forms on your right. Continue on past them and go through a gate which is also a "stop sign". Continue on through the 2nd and 3rd stop sign and if you're feeling strong, do a few "pull-ups" on your left. After you're done, look for the bridge that leads off of the Western MD rail trail and onto the C&O Canal Trail. It will be to your right. Once you cross the bridge, go left until you pass mile marker 124 which will be on the right side of the trail. (This trail is level and smooth, but is not paved). Soon after mile marker 124, there is a little trail that leads off to the right that will take you down to the river. It's steep and has natural "steps" but is a beautiful place to see for the more adventerous hiker; However, this trail does not lead to the letterbox, and is definitely not good for small children so if you don't want to go on it, please feel free to proceed on. From the point where this little trail leads off the main path, proceed about 100 paces. Look to your left and you will see several camper trailers to your left which are across the canal at a place where they are sold. Then look to your immediate right and you will see a huge tree that would look perfectly natural in the 100 acre forest where Winnie the Pooh lives. If you follow the trunk of this tree around to where it faces the Potomac River, you will see a hole big enough for Pooh Bear to go in and out comfortably. Pooh, and the Crusaders have left something in that hole for you to find. Please bring your own ink pad! Place box back in safely for others to find. Note: if you find that you passed mile marker 123, you have gone way too far!
