This is me and my five year old son’s first letterbox (it’s tin!). We saw the idea in Ranger Rick Magazine and wanted to do it as a way to get involved in outdoor treasure hunts.

To find this letterbox you'll need to find Whitney State Forest. It’s off of Lee’s Ridge Road outside (SW) of Warrenton.

There is only one parking area, so park there. Big trees! Big oaks, big poplars, and big pines in this forest as well as pesky squirrels and the occasional tom turkey, fox hunters on horses, other horse riders, mountain bikers, and people letting their dogs chase the pesky squirrels. Great place to take your dog. Despite all the different types of users, this forest is not crowded at all so enjoy the quiet woods.

Meanwhile, take a walk down the gravel road. You’ll pass some stands of white and loblolly pines on your left. I believe a fairy ring exists within the white pine grove. So beware or you may find yourself waking from a decades long nap!

Near the white pine grove, a field will come into view on the right. Keep walking until you come to the green sheds. Look to the left and see the stone house in ruins. Overhanging the house is a tree. The tree is to the right of the house as you look at in from the green sheds. Go to that tree. Look around and you will see an old fallen tree on the ground about twenty feet away. The box is on the other side of the fallen tree. Good luck. Also, a warning: my son says to watch out for prickly bushes in the forest.

After you are finished with the letterbox, you may want to walk across the field to the fence line and take a gander at the castle/house in the distance. Some knight of the roundtable or something lives there. My son says it’s a beautiful view in the valley, especially at sunset. Follow that trail back to the gravel road and the parking lot. I hope you have fun. The walk is about 1.5 to 2 miles round trip. Bring your own inkpad.

Let me know if the box needs replacing. We live pretty close.
