The county and town of Zapata carry the name of Colonel Jose Antonio Zapata, a native of Guererro Mexico, a village located just across the Rio Grande. He was a highly respected individual, rancher, and an honorable military soldier who gave his life for the cause of personal liberties during the short lived and ill fated attempt to establish the Republic of the Rio Grande. From 1836 to 1848, the area between the Rio Grande and Nueces Rivers was claimed by Texas as well as by Mexico. Discontented with the Mexican Centralist government's policies, this area broke away to become The Republic of the Rio Grande. Though it did not last, Zapata county can claim a seventh flag to their history. You can find this microbox replica of the flag at the Zapata Cemetery.
Directions:
From Hwy 83 in Zapata, go south on Hwy 496 (E. 13th ave) for a little more than 1 mile to Zapata Cemetery on the left. Drive through gate and continue to the back of the cemetery, following the row of evergreens. At end, turn right and go just a little ways, parking just past the grave for Meza.
Clues:
Walk north past Ramirez tombstone to the grave of Trujillo with 2 evergreens behind it. Lean over the tombstone and look on the back side for the microbox under rocks and needles. Please rehide well.
