Washers is a game of skill, similar to Horseshoes, in which individuals or teams compete against one another in an effort to be the first to reach a winning score of 11, 17 or 21 points. The game consists of two washer pits located opposite one another, each with a recessed cup. Contestants stand in one pit and throw washers toward the cup in the other pit. The object is to land in the cup, or nearest the cup, to score. Though the history of the game is cloaked in mystery, it could have started simply by one farmer betting another that he could toss a washer in a cup. This microbox dedicated to the game of washers is not placed in a location known for washers. In fact, it was placed along a road simply to populate the county of Schleicher and I'm sorry for that. Given more time I would have put it in a more interesting place.
Directions:
From Fort McKavett, take Hwy 864 southwest for about 1 mile, crossing the county line and Terrett Draw. After climbing out of the draw, look on the left for the back side of a brown sign advertising a Historical Marker 1 mile ahead (which would be 1 mile behind you). Just beyond are 2 white posts on either side of the road. Do a U-turn at the posts and park off the road by a large multi-trunk tree on the same side as the brown sign.
Clues:
Walk to the tree and look in the crotch under a rock for the microbox. Please be careful doing the U-turn.
