*** Old West Fort Series ***

The "Fort Duncan" Minibox is located in at the Fort Duncan Museum in a city park in Eagle pass. Some of the fort buildings are still standing, and are labeled. Fort Duncan was established on March 27, 1849 on the left bank of the Rio Grande River. The first permanent buildings were erected in 1850. Captain Sidney Burbank (1st US Infantry) established the fort, and it was named for Colonel James Duncan (Inspector General's Department). It was evacuated by Federal troops on March 20, 1861, and was garrisoned by Confederate troops for part of the Civil War, and was called Rio Grande Station at this time. It has been claimed that Fort Duncan was the last Confederate outpost to surrender to the union. Federal troops returned on March 23, 1868, but the land was rented and the government abandoned it on August 31, 1883. In 1891 a cavalry post was established at Eagle Pass and designated Post at Eagle Pass or Camp Eagle Pass. In 1894 the original post was finally re-aquired by the government, but many of building were in ruins. The fort was irregularly occupied during the border troubles with Mexico following the outbreak of the Mexican Revolution. It was finally abandoned in 1916.

Directions:
Take Hwy 57 toward border, left on FM 1021, right on Bliss st., then right into picnic area near Commissary building and park at "Jesse Sumpter Picnic Area".

To the Minibox:
From Brown sign, walk along road toward 3 picnic tables toward the "Dickie" plant. Go to the farthest picnic table, near another roadway. From the table, go past the big tree, toward Dickies, to white pole with cable through it. In the pole, where cable goes through, is the box, with rock on each end to hide it.
