This letterbox was planted in the winter for those who don’t think letterboxing is a warm weather activity. Kick and Glide celebrates cross-country skiing in Cadwell Memorial Forest, my favorite local XC ski get-away. Enjoy the quiet beauty of this area as you kick and glide along the trail. Maybe you will see a moose (I did once). You can also hike to the box in any season.

Driving directions: Cadwell Memorial Forest, Pelham, MA

From Amherst Center go east on Main St. through the intersection with North East St. At this point Main St. becomes Pelham Rd. Follow Pelham Rd into Pelham, past the Library to Enfield Rd on your right. Turn onto Enfield Rd and go about 2 miles. At a Y intersection, Enfield Rd becomes Packardville Rd. to your left. The gate and parking area are on your left about 100 yards beyond this intersection. There is a large sign that marks the parking lot.

Clue Difficulty: Easy
Terrain: Easy. Takes about 1 hour RT

Start out on the main trail from the parking lot. This trail is called Queen’s Road on the map. You will pass a trail map box on the right. Then an old concrete culvert on the right will be a few more minutes down the trail. Then a pile of rusty metal pipes on the right a bit further. Next you will enter an open wooded area with yellow signs that say “Urban Forest Research Project”. Just past this you will see the white blaze of the Metacomet and Monadnock trail. The trail goes right (south) here. Go past it and over the bridged stream and take a left on the M& M trail going north. You will see a small sign for the M& M trail and a sign telling you to boil your water. When you see these signs turn to your left toward the stream and the stream bridge. You will see a rock ledge on the bank of the stream. Kick & Glide is covered by rocks under that ledge. Rehide completely. Bring stamp pad and pen.
