The original Johnny Rebs' Southern Roadhouse opened in Long Beach in 1984, offering Southern Californians the best pulled pork and fried chicken, collard greens and black-eyed peas, catfish and hushpuppies, country ham and grits this side of the Mississippi. Still family owned by Cheryl Carter (the brains and much of the brawn behind the restaurant) and her husband Larry (a transplant from North Carolina), the original recipes were created by John Ingle, a down-home barbecue chef and an old high-school buddy of Larry's from Winston-Salem.
From the bluegrass, country and dixieland jazz on their sound system, to the Blackened Voodoo and Shiner Bock beer in their cooler, everything about this place is the real Southern experience. The friendly staff will bring you an RC Cola in a Mason jar while you munch on a bucket of peanuts and toss the shells on the floor.
And don't forget to order some Fried Green Tomatoes.
Over the years, they've slowly grown, opening locations in Bellflower, Orange and Victorville. We planted our letterbox in the parking lot of the Orange restaurant, at 2940 E Chapman Ave. Check 'em out at www.johnnyrebs.com
