Travel to Savoy Mountain State Forest in Florida Mass. and obtain a trail map at the forest headquarters. In winter, refer to the winter use side of the map as many of the roads shown are closed to auto traffic in winter, and must be hiked, skied or snowshoed. You can drive from the forest headquarters to a large parking area on Florida Rd. where you need to park in the winter. In summer and fall, you can drive down Tannery Rd. to the Balanced Rock Trail. There is a short, steep hike from the junction of Tannery Rd. and the Balanced Rock trail (where there is a small sign) to Balanced Rock. Avoid a trail on the right half way up the hill, and continue up to the left. Shortly, you will come to the impressive Balanced Rock, which looks as if it was picked up and dropped in its current location. As you follow the trail and face the actual rock, look to your right, and at about 100 feet, there is another smaller boulder just into the woods. If you reach under the front edge of this rock, you will find the Balanced Rock letterbox tucked under the base of the rock and hidden by some other small rocks. "You did it!" This is the first of many letterboxes to be placed by the Robust Trampers
