After shoving off from the Wood River, Illinois site on May 14, 1804, it took Clark and his men more than two days to reach St. Charles, Missouri. Lewis joined them a few days later and they departed on May 21. They moved slowly upriver through Jefferson City and then Kansas City, and on July 4, 1804 arrived at an oxbow lake near present-day Lewis & Clark Village. Today the lake is known as Lewis and Clark Lake and borders Lewis and Clark State Park, the home of this letterbox. Just as in Lewis and Clark's day, waterfowl still flock to this oxbow lake and fishing is good. The park also has picnic sites and camping.

Directions:
Lewis and Clark State Park is 58 miles from downtown Kansas City. Take I29 north to Hwy 92 and go west through Platte City to Hwy 45. Travel north on Hwy 45 to Hwy 138 and go west until you reach the state park.

Clues:
Park in the lot on the right across from the park office (after camping area). Walk back down the main road (east) the way you came for about 200 yards. Look to the right (south) and find a pine tree between two large cottonwood trees about 30 steps from the road. Go to the pine tree and face south at 185 and walk 15 steps to a small tree with a Y fork near its base at the edge of the clearing. Look behind the tree in the brush about two steps for a dead stump (you will need to step over a low barbed wire). Look for the box within the stump under dead leaves and bark. Please re-cover well.
