Terrain Difficulty: Easy (flat, 500 yards RT)
Status: retired (06/17/09)

In August, 1804, Lewis and Clark entered the area now known as South Dakota. They traveled upriver past today's towns of Yankton, Chamberlain and Pierre. On September 24 they passed the current site of Farm Island State Recreation Area, where they picked up fresh elk meat and prepared gifts for the Teton chiefs they would soon meet at the mouth of the Bad River in present Fort Pierre. The confrontation with the Teton Indians degenerated into a nearly disastrous quarrel but was defused by chief Black Buffalo. Today, Farm Island is an inviting nature preserve where you can get a sense of how things looked along the river in 1804. Hiking, bird watching and camping are just some of the activities enjoyed here, along with looking for this letterbox.

Directions:
Farm Island State Recreation Area is located 4 miles east of Pierre, off SD Hwy 34. Pay $5.00 fee at entrance and drive south toward Farm Island. Turn right at the gravel road with a Lewis & Clark Trail sign and drive to a parking area at the Lewis & Clark To Griffin Park trail head.

Clues:
From the trail head, walk west about 100 yards to a picnic area on the left. From the picnic area, continue on the trail another 150 yards. The trail has some slight curves, however there is one double curve that is tighter in the trail that should stand out. After this double curve keep watch to your left where you should see a fallen tree (white in color) pointing North/East. With your back against the fallen tree face north and walk about 13 steps off-trail to three trees together. The box is behind the third tree under some dead branches. Please re-cover well.
