Manzanitas are neat plants, small hugging the ground sorts to bushy chaparral to smallish trees with lovely reddish brown bark. They are very distinctive plants and once you know them, all 60 or so types of them, you will not mistake them for something else. Manzanita in Spanish means “little apple,” but don’t eat any! The flowers which are small and seem to bloom mostly in the winter are truly elegant and this letterbox is in recognition of their beauty.

First, head out to Lake Mendocino and Coyote Dam. There are several routes to Lake Mendocino, but to access the letterbox from Hwy. 101 take the Lake Mendocino exit several miles north of Ukiah. From the exit turn in the direction of Detroit and at the light turn left onto North State Street. At the next light turn right onto Lake Mendocino Drive. Continue on Lake Mendocino Drive until you see the South Boat Ramp sign and the small parking area to your right. If it’s full drive down to the larger parking lot down the hill.

To find the Manzanita Blossum Letterbox walk over Coyote Dam. Turn left and down at the itty-bitty house and onto the Kaweyo Trail. Pass the bench and stairs. When you get to the Y bear left and stay on the trail. Eventually you will reach a particular trail sign. Back down a few steps on the trail at that sign and to the left will be a seasonal creek which today is dry and a smaller path over the creek and up. Go up.

When you reach the top you’ll suddenly be on the flats and in manzanita country. As soon as you reach the top of the path turn right or east and walk about seven steps. Look to your right. Under the large (about 12’) manzanita, at its base and under a rock you will find the Manzanita Blossum Letterbox. Duck-walk your way under and stamp in! Please reclose and rehide with care.

Thanks for coming.
