Placed by Hez.
Placement date: February 8, 2009
Nearest city: Tucson
Number of boxes: 1
Trail difficulty: slightly moderate; there is no trail and there is a scramble up a rocky slope.
This box is in the Coronado National Forest northeast of Tucson. Driving towards Tucson from the east on I-10, take exit 275 and go north on Houghton Rd. Turn right on Catalina Highway. Going towards Tucson from the north on I-10, take exit 256 and drive east on Grant Rd. Turn left on Tanque Verde Rd. Turn left on Catalina Highway. Driving up the highway, look for mile post 4. Continue for 0.4 miles more and turn left into a fairly large dirt pullout. A long high pile of rocks and dirt forms an “island” between the highway and the pullout. From the west corner of the pullout, look at about 245 degrees (from mag. north) across the wash and on the far grassy slope and you will see a large broad lone Mesquite Tree (there is a very large boulder under its south side). Make your way over to it. It was easiest to go down into the wash and back up the slope. From the east edge of the tree, go at about 68 degrees for a few yards to a large split boulder. The box is along the north edge of the largest boulder under some rocks and plant debris. Be very alert for snakes.
This box was placed for the 5th Annual Tucson Letterboxers Gathering.
