I planted this box for the Voluntown Library's summer reading program then did a presentation on letterboxing for the children. About 16 kids were present and we all had a great time.

A brief history of the Voluntown library:

With $100 appropriated at a town meeting on November 14, 1941, some donations of books, and homemade bookcases, the library was established in one of the rooms in the elementary school. At this time, six directors were also selected.

A few years later, the bookcases were knocked down and reassembled in the town hall where the library continued until the 1970’s. At that time, a small vacant room was provided. In 1977-1978, the town hall was remodeled and a larger room was provided for the library.

Between 1978-1998, the library expanded services and the number of holdings grew. It soon became clear that a new facility was necessary to answer the needs of a growing population who depended upon the library as a source of informational and recreational reading. At that time, the town was able to procure a small former post office building, more than double it’s size and open for business in 1999.

Clues:

From the main entrance of the library, head N to the red town garage building. Behind the building, take the path between two handicapped signs, going north. Follow the path 2/3 way around the soccer field. At the end of the second green fence, turn NW, follow the grass path down to the pond. Stop by the white table and chairs and enjoy the view. Are there any ducks swimming around today? Continue following the pond edge grass path. At the dirt road go NW to the turn around. In the middle of the turn around is a white pipe with 2 large rocks behind it. Between the rocks is a smaller rock. Beneath it, find your treasure. Continue back up the dirt road to the red building and back to the library. Stop in and visit the librarian, Deb, to tell her you were there to visit the box.

Have fun and enjoy!
