The Lost Mitten
Directions:
Ravine Park, Middletown, CT
From Washington St., Middletown, (Route 66), go south for about one mile on High Street through Wesleyan University. Turn right onto Beach Street opposite Warwick Street and park at the small pull-off on the left.
General Information:
The Lost Mitten started out at a great gathering for Rubaduc on December 21, 2008, and has been lost and found again and finally planted in this tiny, 19-acre urban sanctuary owned by the City of Middletown. Although impacted greatly by human activity, the park contains many examples of wetland vegetation. Red maple, beech, oak, ironwood and spicebush are examples of dominate tress here. Skunk cabbage is abundant and horsetail and pagoda can also be found. As in any urban area, non-native invasive species such as Japanese knotweed, multi-flora rose and garlic mustard are present. This is also a good area for birding.
Clues:
To begin your search, start at the Beach Street parking area and head easterly on this level trail, following the brook through Pike’s Ravine. When you pass the horsetails and skunk cabbage on your right and two boards bridging some erosion brook side, look to your right for a large tree. Pass the tree and make your way slightly uphill to another tree with a slit at its base. Reach inside for the Lost Mitten.
Please be careful not to step on any vegetation. And, if you find yourself staring at Wesleyan's athletic fields, you've gone too far.
