LITTLE SHIPS ON THE SHORE

Updated 7/12/2010; trails have changed since planting!

A short loop, 45 minutes or so, in a new park. These stamps debuted on the Letterbox Cruise last June, and now are planted for all to enjoy.

What a surprise! As I drove down Short Beach Road in Branford one day, crossed into East Haven, passed a firehouse on the left and just before a manatee (!) I saw a LOVELY fenced parking area for FARM RIVER STATE PARK! There was even a map board. The next day, I came back to explore and plant boxes in this new discovery. Quinnipiac University is managing this undeveloped park, and the trails are a work in progress.

Park in the lovely parking area, and head left through the fence opening, and down a wide gravel path. When you come to a clearing, pass a conjoined tree on your right and DON'T follow the hiker sign down and to the right. Continue straight, and follow the unofficial trail down that hill. Soon you will see a ledge on your right; look behind a tri-forked oak on your right (Little Ship #1 is there, under slate).

Continue just a bit – can be seasonally muddy here and there will be a small stream on your left (there was today). Veer off the gravel trail when an unofficial path continues straight ahead - go straight on it. There will be a garbagey hill to your right. You will come to a rock on your right, right next to the path, with a leaning stump – Little Ship #2 is between the rock and stump, again with slate.

Again, soon, you will come to a spot where a path leads right to a dirt road with saltmarsh beyond, straight toward a road, or curves left – curve left! When you see a big 3-sister tree on your left, look behind it, under slate, for Little Ship #3. Now you are on the "official" trail.

When you see some logs on your right, by a bridge, step over them onto the unofficial trail along an often-dry streambed. Shortly, you will see a group of four large trees on your right – one has an open area at its roots – Little Ship #4 resides there, under slate. Return to the gravel trail by the bridge.

Follow the official gravel trail until it crosses another little bridge and then heads up the hill.
As you head up, look left there for a roundish conglomerate-type of boulder on the left, leaning on the rock below. Look on its left side, but this time, under bark, for the final Little Ship.

Continue on up the trail to the top, take the path to the right and soon reach the clearing (looks familiar?). Head left and you should see your car to the right. This place has lots of potential!
