Find the town of Apollo (on the Kiskimenatas River in Armstrong County). The stoplight at near the river is at First Street and Kiski Avenue. Go on Kiski Ave. .8 miles to Canal Dr. which bears right and continue .4 miles to the parking area of the Roaring Run Trail. This trail follows an old railroad bed that covered the PA Mainline Canal. Go past the picnic area and there is a survey marker and sign denoting it as part of the Canal. From there you will proceed approximately 1.5 miles to the entrance of a guardlock (it looks like a channel through a hill, but has stone walls). (Count the benches on the right - you are looking for the 8th one from the parking area, about one-quarter mile past the 2nd mile marker.) Directly across the path from the 8th bench and approximately 20 yards into the woods are visible 2 large stones - one above the other. What you seek is under the upper stone. If you explore to the right of your quest you will find and old foundation. This was the lock tender's house. Parts of the old lock are evident. A guardlock is one where the canal boats came in from the river slackwater and travelled in a dug canal.
