This box is located in the Argos Library. The Library has moved to its new location at 142 North Michigan Street, a historic building donated by Charles Schoonover, a retired local businessman. Dating from the 1870's this building was used for over 100 years as a retail dry goods establishment. It is the northern most building on the west side of Michigan Street in down town Argos.

THE AMAZING HEART
Before doctors knew much about the circulatory system and the function of the heart figurative words were often attached to the heart to discribe people's personalities. One can be soft-hearted or cold hearted; light-hearted or heavy-hearted. You can be big-hearted, have a heart of gold, a tender heart or even a hard heart. You can learn something by heart and we can have a heart to heart talk. Your heart will beat faster when you're with your sweetheart. The one who captures your heart, your heart-throb, melts your heart but hopefully doesn't break your heart.
It is my heartfelt wish for you to enjoy The Amazing Heart letterbox.

Now, for some amazing facts about the heart?

* Hold out your hand and make a fist. If you're a kid, your heart is about the same size as your fist, and if you're an adult, it's about the same size as two fists.

* lub-DUB, lub-DUB, lub-DUB. Sound familiar? If you listen to your heart beat, you'll hear two sounds. These "lub" and "DUB" sounds are made by the heart valves as they open and close.

* As a kid, your resting pulse might range from 90 to 120 beats per minute. As an adult, your pulse rate slows to an average of 60-75 beats per minute and increases with exercise.

* Your heart is an amazing organ. It continuously pumps oxygen and nutrient-rich blood throughout your body to sustain life beating about 100,000 times per day, pumping five or six quarts of blood through it each minute, or about 2000 gallons per day.

* The heart works 24 hours a day 7 days a week it never takes a nap.

* The heart is really good at what it does — it takes less than 60 seconds to pump blood to every cell in your body. The blood recirculates 1500 times each day and more with exercise to speed it up.

* The aorta, the largest artery in the body, is almost the diameter of a garden hose. Capillaries, on the other hand, are so small that it takes ten of them to equal the thickness of a human hair.

* Arteries carry oxygen-rich blood away from the heart to all of the body's tissues and veins carry oxygen poor blood back to the heart and into the lungs for a fresh supply of oxygen.

* If all the vessels were laid end-to-end, they'd extend about 60,000 miles. That's enough to encircle the earth twice.

??? and some people think there is no God ???

Locate the referense books in the back of the library. Among the medical referense books is a book with the same name as this letterbox. Open the front cover to find what makes boxers hearts beat faster. If you are one of the first 6 to stamp in look in the back cover for a first finders gift. I hope what you have found thrills your heart.

This and other boxes in this library are place with the librarians' full knowledge and overwhelming approval.
