Bears in Illinois? No way, there couldn't possibly be a black bear roaming around the countryside in Neponset, Illinois. Surprise! Those folks weren't crazy after all. There was a black bear roaming around in Bureau County from at least July 2008-Feb 2009. These links document the story and provide a good idea of where in Bureau County to begin your bear hunt:

The locals believe, based on the timing of the bear sitings, there is at least one more bear still out there. You might see the real thing or maybe some tracks while searching for my bear, it was captured near by. Folks around here are very protective and if you mention you are bear hunting, they just might let some buckshot fly in your direction! You've been warned...

This box is hidden in a little known park in Macon Township. Seriously, I lived in Neponset for 21 years and never knew this place existed! Your starting point is found on County Rd 940 N or is it 925 N – hard to tell – somewhere between Old Route 88 & 650 E. Once you find the start, park on the side of the road (as best you can) and put the flashers on. Start at the sign and follow the trail posts until they end. Count back 3, look to 30º and you'll spot the bear hibernating on top of a fallen tree, hidden by debris. Enjoy your hunt and be sure to rehide well, so he doesn't end up like the original Bureau County Bear!!
