* CHANGING LOCATION & REPAIRING LETTERBOX- some hooligans got to our first letterbox & "decorated" it with their "art", accompanied by "clever" captions. The stamp & box are gone, but they left the logbook (presumably so their contributions would be appreciated. We stumbled upon it the same day, fortunately, and are fixing & moving it. Update to follow... 3/29/09

Ryan Park is a great for walking, running, XC Skiing, or even an easy canoe trip. The trails are flat and most are wide, great for a stroll with kids or Grandparents. This Letterbox is easy and quick for kids.

There are multiple entrances to the park, make sure you go to the one with the baseball fields and the boat launch off Oak Hill Rd. In case you want to bring a map with you, here it is: http://www.northkingstown.org/recreationdept/ryan.pdf

Driving Directions From North: Take 95 south to Exit 9 (Route 4), follow route 4 until 1st traffic light and take left on Oak Hill Road. Take the SECOND Ryan Park entrance, which will be on your left approximately 1-2 miles. From South: From 95 north take exit 3 (route 138 east-Newport/URI) Follow 138 east until you come to junction of route 1. Take left at light onto route 1 north. At first traffic light stay left following signs to route 4 north. At 2nd traffic light take right on Oak Hill Road. Take the SECOND Ryan Park entrance, which will be on your left approximately 1-2 miles. Go past the baseball fields (either direction) and park at the back of the park by the Boat Ramp/Trailhead/Waterfowl Hunting Sign.

Clues: Double back away from the water. Take your first left onto a dirt road and walk past the men’s softball field and a small parking area on your right. Turn left to walk past the green gate. Traverse the bridge and look across the pond to your left- you will see the arching bridge that spans Belleville Pond. Continue to walk along the lake, and then proceed down across another bridge. The dam and fish ladder will be on your left. Throw a stick into the water and follow it downstream 19 paces off the bridge.

Continue left around the pond for an absolutely beautiful and easy walk at any time of year! The trails are not well marked, so you may want to take a map or be open to a little exploration.
