Note: Be sure to check Tulare County are buddies so you will be boxing in 2 counties while in the Kern River Valley.! Box checked on Oct 4, 2015.

Don was asked by friend Jim Clark to officiate at his father’s funeral service and never having officiated at anyone’s funeral Don was somewhat perplexed on how to conduct the service. Jim actually made his job pretty easy once he showed Don his father’s medals, citations and news copies of his heroism.

William A.” Bud” Clark, Company M, 164th Infantry, America Division WWII was in Guadalcanal 1942. This very quiet unassuming man never mentioned his service during WWII but was a true hero.

With his heroism in mind the service was held near the Kern River at Mountain River Adventures campground that Bud help build. Today there are two boulders near the volleyball court that bear two plaques commemorating Bud and his wife.

Displays of his medals and speakers that related Bud’s heroism and how he won the Distinguished Service Cross on October 25, 1942 on Guadalcanal highlighted the day of his Memorial service..

The Distinguished Service Cross, second only to the Medal of Honor is awarded for extraordinary heroism and gallantry. Here follows Bud's story: Sergeant William A Clark and his squad were trying to hold a line of attack against strong Japanese resistance. In order to fortify their position it was necessary to retrieve two damaged machine guns, which were beyond their line and approximately 25 feet from the enemy line. Sergeant Clark and two companions made the desperate attempt to get the much-needed guns. His companions were killed, and he went on alone, retrieved the guns and returned to his position. Sergeant Clark stripped the guns and was able to make one serviceable gun from the parts. He immediately put the gun into action, repulsing the enemy attack, saved his platoon, and made the line secure. Slightly wounded in this action he carried out his duties.

On November 20, 1942 Sergeant Clark and his squad set up an advanced machine gun position when after one burst he was hit by enemy machine gun fire and had to be removed to a field hospital and was awarded his second Purple Heart. He returned to the United States for treatment and long recovery.

In addition to the DSC Bud was awarded The Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Navy Presidential Unit citation and the Combat Infantryman’s Badge.

Bud came to live in the Kern Valley and retirement didn’t seem to suit him. John Stallone the owner of Mountain River Adventures was fortunate when he hired Bud as a bus driver. Bud turned into John’s right hand and surrogate father figure. Much of MRA’s campground was put into existence with the help of Bud.

Hey Bud, this one is for you!

Box location
Drive north on Sierra way from Kernville a couple of miles until you see a very, very large wooden bear on your left near the entrance to MRA Campground. Park in the lot. The Bear's tail points the way to the box under a flat rock. Use your multi colored pens for a colorful image.

If anyone should challenge you just advise them that John and Rhonda said it is okay to look for Bud’s letterbox.
