Letterbox Name: The Great American Pin-up Series: Kara
Location: Libertyville, IL
Distance: Drive-by

Once upon a time, there were eight lovely sisters. They were born in Lake County, Illinois, and were raised in an old farmhouse. They grew tall and strong and, though they loved the home in which they’d been raised, each knew that there would come a time when she would need to go out and find her place in the world.

And so they did. Every once in a while, though, they were visited by cousins and friends who were likewise looking for a place to call their own. So it was that Carina bumped into Kara, and helped point her toward a place that she could call home.

Some may recall that Carina was always interested in how things work, and eventually found a job at Great America, maintaining the magnificent roller coasters and rides that towered above the Northern Lake County landscape. One day, as she walked along toward the Superman roller coaster, she bumped into a lovely woman in a blue t-shirt and a short skirt, who was also proudly wearing a Superman cape. As Carina turned to apologize, she recognized the woman as Kara, one of Ethel’s childhood playmates. Much like Ethel, Kara had always enjoyed adventures and costumes. Where Ethel had leaned toward tales of pirates, Kara was particularly fond of superhero stories.

“Kara?” asked Carina excitedly.

“Yes?” replied Kara hesitantly. “Do I know you?”

“I’m Carina, Ethel’s little sister. It’s been a while, I know.”

“Carina! Oh, it’s good to see you. It’s been a long time. How is Ethel?”

“Well, she moved out of the old house. We all did, actually. She found a place of her own up near Antioch, near a nice lake, with lots of trees to climb.”

“Really? I guess I always imagined her ending up somewhere like that. It would be great to see her some time. So how are you? Do you work here?”

“Yes,” replied Carina excitedly. “I get to make sure that these rides stay running safely. I see your still a fan of Superman.”

“Yeah, I guess my interest in comic book heroes stayed with me. I love the Superman roller coaster, though. I love to imagine that I’m flying.”

“Well,” answered Carina, as she cast an appreciative glance at Kara’s outfit, “You definitely look the part.”

Kara blushed. “Well, it kind of adds to the fun, don’t you think?”

“Definitely! Now come with me. I was headed over to Superman to do a quick check on the operator’s stations. If you’d like, we can ride a few times together. Do you like the front row?”

“Of course! That would be wonderful.”

And so Carina grabbed Kara’s hand, and they walked off toward the coaster. They zipped off into the air, lost together in a dream of flight. They laughed together as they rushed along the tracks with nothing but open sky in front of them and below them. They cried out together as they plunged down hills, rolled through loops, and rose back up again. And when they’d finished their fifth ride, they reluctantly decided that it was enough for now.

When they exited the ride, Carina and Kara sat down at a nearby table. “So do you have a place yet?” asked Carina.

“No. I’ve been looking, but no place feels quite right. I mean, there’s this place, but it’s just always so crowded.”

“Yeah, this is definitely a nice place to visit. Wouldn’t want to live here. I do know of a place that might be right up your alley, though.”

“Really?” asked Kara. “Where is it? Is it near here?”

“Not too far,” answered Carina. “It’s out near where Mirage lives now, in Libertyville.”

“Oh. Mirage was never very nice to me. Or to Ethel, for that matter.”

“Don’t worry. You wouldn’t exactly be next-door neighbors. Besides, Mirage has grown up a bit since she left home. But anyway, there’s this comic shop. You’d be surrounded by all those heroes and heroines that you love so much. And you’d be close enough to visit here whenever you wanted,” Carina said with an enthusiastic grin.

“I’d like that,” Kara said, smiling back at her friend. “So how do I get there?”

“It’s totally easy,” replied Carina. Just head south on Milwaukee Avenue into Libertyville. The comic book store is at the corner of Milwaukee and Old Rockland Road. It’s called Dreamland Comics.”

“That sounds wonderful. I’ll definitely check it out.” And with that, she reached across the table and hugged Carina, thrilled at the prospect of finding a place of her own, and happy to have struck up a wonderful new friendship.

As they parted, Carina said “I have to get back to work, but let me know how it goes, okay? I definitely want to have you over to my place some time. And we can always meet up here on my days off.”

“That’s wonderful,” said Kara happily as they stood up and embraced again. As she walked away, Carina stole a glance over her shoulder at Kara and smiled. And Kara walked along, grinning excitedly, with her red cape swaying behind her, making her way toward Dreamland.

The Great American Pin-up series is, first and foremost, a celebration of the style, femininity, and fun of pin-up art over the years. We hope that you enjoy the images as much as we’ve enjoyed selecting and carving them.

Please note: The stamps are a bit large, and will require a 4”x 6” space for stamping. While the stamp will only require blue ink, you may want to use the colored pencils that are included in the box to complete the effect.
