On May 16, 2003, TurtleMcQ planted the Shooting Star Letterbox in Rockport, MA. This box is in honor of a particularly meaningful shooting star seen in Rockport in early June 2000.

If you visit this amazing park with children, you'll want to keep them close to you especially when passing the quarry and on the ocean rocks. The trail is narrow and uneven in many places but still navigable by little feet (with the appropriate assistance). Warning signs abound near the rocks, but the spectacular ocean views are worth the extra caution.

You can find driving directions to the park where the box is located at

http://www.halibutpointstatepark.com/

Park in the lot then follow the Entrance Trail to the Visitor's Center. If it's open, grab a trail map at the Visitor's Center to make the appropriate trail to follow a little more clear. You can bypass most of the directions below if you can get yourself to the Sea Rocks using just the map.

Behind the Visitor's Center, follow the sign onto the "Self-Guided Trail." Follow this trail past rocks marked with a 2 and a 3, then go to the right at the fork in the path. At the iron hook in the middle of the path, go right and down towards the ocean. Stick to this main path, even as it narrows. Continue to follow the path as it turns to the left, still going down towards the ocean. After walking over large lichen covered rocks, go towards the right. You'll see a solitary house in the distance. When the trail dead-ends at a gravel path, take it to the left. Continue to follow the trail as it turns to dirt and grass. Soon you'll find yourself at a white wood sign marking the Reservation boundary and saying "Sea Rocks This Way."

Approximately 18 inches to the right of this Sea Rocks sign, and approximately 18 inches back into the bushes, a shooting star stays hidden from sight under a pile of flat rocks that might seem a little out of place. The Sea Rocks sign is not permanently affixed to the ground although it looks as though it's not often moved. It's fair to assume that the sign is still in the same place if the solitary house appears almost directly behind the sign from the trail. You'll also see a large boulder by itself on the hill up to the right. This sign is just a short way down the trail from another Reservation Boundary sign.

Please replace the box in the bushes with care, and cover it with the rocks to hide it from casual sight. To return to the Visitor's Center, simply backtrack up the trail. If you're feeling more adventurous, climb the rocks up along the coast and you'll eventually hook up with other trails. A map at the end of the ocean overlook trail will help you identify portions of New Hampshire and Maine on the horizon.

This box is an orphan. Please send status reports through the email link below if you find it.

NOTES:
1 There's neither inkpad nor pencil in the box, so be sure to bring your own.
2 Replace the box carefully in its hiding place after you've stamped in.
