Evergreen Trail: A Series of Two Boxes
“Ducks in a Row”
“Connecticut Stones"
A fairly flat walk with a slight incline.

Machimoodus State Park, Moodus, CT

Take the Lower Vista Trail past the shed. Stay on the main trail to the second trail on the right (just past the marsh and the open field on the left). Take this trail to the right. You will find swamp land on both sides of the trail. When the trail splits, bear to the right. At a second split bear right again (A left here would take you up an incline to a dumping area). Proceed to a small clearing and take a lovely walk in front of the evergreens, with the Salmon River below to your right. When the evergreens end, you will find “Ducks in a Row”. Count to between 9 and 10 and look northwest. Box #1 “Ducks in a Row” is behind an outcrop. Don’t go too far, you’ll get wet!

Now walk southeast through the open field, keeping the evergreens on your left. The trees you see are white spruce (classic, upturned needles, green), blue spruce (same shape as white spruce, but a blue tone to the needles) and Norway spruce (slightly downturned branches, looks “hairier”). Soon you will come to a stone wall. Walking north along the wall, the first hemlock you come to hides Box #2 “Connecticut Stones”.

Turn to walk south along the stone wall until it ends at the dirt trail. Go left on the trail and follow until you come to a trail marker where this trail meets the Lower Vista Trail. You can go right to the Lower Vista Overlook to see a beautiful view of the Connecticut River or go left/straight and follow the trail back to the parking lot.
