LIFE IS A THREE RING CIRCUS
#4 – Center Ring – TRAPEZE ARTISTS

Relatively Easy

Directions:

From the intersection of Route 6 and Route 169 in Brooklyn
Drive north on Route 169 for 1.3 miles.
Pull over between the stone columns at the entrance to the power line tract. (The letters SQ are carved in the stone) Make a U turn and park directly across the street headed back toward Brooklyn center.

There is a sign identifying this trail as the “C. Vaughan Ferguson, Jr. Conservancy.”
There is a mailbox next to the sign labeled “Trail Maps,” but on the day we were there it was empty.
The beginning of the trail is easy to follow. There were a few wet spots since we’d had heavy rain a few days before, but it was certainly passable even for our 5 year old.
Look for the “PINK” blazes, which were not always easy to find.
You will pass through the opening in a stone wall. Look for the “Bat houses” on your right. And watch out for rusty barbed wire which we saw in several areas.
Pass through the opening in a 2nd wall and go up a gentle hill.
Just before you reach the opening in a 3rd stone wall the trail bears to the left and follows along the wall. When the wall takes a 90o turn to the right, the trail continues straight and starts down hill.
Half way down the hill the trail curves to the left. Watch for the pink blazes, and some beautiful multi-colored quartz rocks.
There will be a pink blaze on a thin sapling that also has names carved in a vertical line below the blaze. ( It looks like Grandma & Brodie.)
From there do NOT continue down to the stream but instead go left to the end of another stone wall. Go around to the back of the wall being very careful of more rusty barbed wire. The box is in a cleft in the wall a few feet from that end.
While we enjoyed the sound of the stream rushing under the wall, we did not attempt to cross the stream and continue on. (We couldn’t actually see any more blazes on the other side.) So we retraced our steps and called it a day. But it looked like an area we might like to explore further some other time.

We hope you are enjoying our “LIFE” series.
