Great Falls Discovery Universal Access Series

Great Falls Discovery Center, Turners Falls

The Center is located on Avenue A in Turners Falls at the bridge over the Connecticut River, across from the Police Station. Bring your own stamp pad and pen. These boxes are as accessible as possible. Some require a low reach. If you have mobility challenges, bring a letterboxing buddy to obtain all the boxes.

 Federal Partner
Stop in at the front desk of the Discovery Center during open hours (Sunday through Saturday, 10am – 4pm, into October, then in October the Center is only open Fridays and Saturdays) and simply ask for this letterbox. You can also pick up a stamp pad here if you don’t have one – please return when you are finished. This box has the logbook for the summer.

 Fossil Footprint
Take a walk through the exhibit hall and notice how it shows habitats of the Connecticut River from source to sea. Take a good look at the animals and birds and enjoy the sights and sounds of life along the river. Continue exploring this small museum until you find the slab of fossil footprints. Next to it on the left is a small rock. Reach behind the rock to locate the letterbox. (Checked July 13, 2009: this box may be out in the open due to a change in the rock situation.)

 Exhibit Escapee #1 MISSING AUGUST 2009
After you finish the inside tour, exit the Discovery Center via the main door and walk towards the accessible parking places. Notice to your left a paved walkway heading down to the water. Follow the walkway to the bike path and turn right. Travel under the bridge and continue to a stop sign. Notice a picnic table ahead on the right. Several trees provide shade here. Look for one with a lot of green branches sprouting from its base. This exhibit escapee is hidden at the base. Please re-hide well! (If you continue a short distance into Unity Park, you’ll find nicer views of the river and have a chance to sight the real subject of this letterbox.)

 Exhibit Escapee #2
Return to the Great Falls Discovery Center and explore the front grounds around the main building. Find a red shed and look under the ramp. Only through letterboxing could something so big hide in such a small space!

 Source to Sea Every year the Connecticut River is cleaned up from source to sea. People gather here to organize into teams that spend the day pulling trash out of the river. This letterbox celebrates that endeavor and uses the Source to Sea graphic to share an image of the river.

Head back toward the main door of the Discovery Center but instead of turning left to actually go to the door, continue down into the courtyard. Before you take a final right turn into the back part of the courtyard, look left across a small, flat grass-covered yard to a stone wall with a green hedge above it, leading to the front door. Long horizontal slabs of granite make up the top row. Notice the ends of the slabs and one crack filled with smaller rocks. Follow the rocks up into the hedge and take a good peek in behind the last rock. Please re-hide carefully.

If you have borrowed a stamp pad from the Center, please return it now and let us know in person how you liked the Great Falls Discovery Center letterboxes or if you had difficulty finding them. Thanks!
