Please note:
In season, typically Memorial Day through Labor Day (but maybe Columbus Day), there is a fee on weekends and holidays.
Dogs are not allowed on the beach.

This hike is between a half mile and a mile round trip. The trails are unmarked, but are well worn and easy to follow.

Wharton Brook in North Haven can be viewed in a number of ways. “In 1918-1920 Wharton State Park was known as a traveler’s wayside; motorists could stop to have their cars serviced and enjoy a quiet picnic lunch. The park was the forerunner of the rest areas developed” later along the highways. (from the DEP brochure about Wharton Brook State Park.). There still is a picnic grove in the area overlooking the pond.

The Wharton Brook Natural Area Preserve was designated in 1987 as a good example of a rare habitat -- “a Pitch Pine sand barren”.

Wharton Brook Pond is also one of Connecticut DEP fisheries division's designated Trout Parks. Angling For A Bite was planted in honor of Opening Day of Fishing Season 2009.

The clues.
Go to the parking lot closest to the beach. Go down the path at the northeast corner of the parking lot, past the concession stand and just over the bridge. The beach will be in front of you to the right.

Immediately to your left is a well worn path which is the beginning of the perimeter loop trail. Looking farther to the right of that path you’ll see another path heading up to a meadow. Go up to the meadow. Go right, following the edge of the meadow to the well worn path on the right. Take this path to its end.

The trail that crosses here connects the two sides of the perimeter loop trail. Take a right onto this trail and follow it as it bears left. This will take you along the edge of Wharton Brook Pond and you’ll pass trails breaking off to the right that lead to fishing spots.

Continue on until you come to the point where the perimeter loop goes left and there is a path to a fishing spot straight ahead and a path to another fishing spot to the right. Take the path to the right for about 20 steps and stop. From this point take about 24 steps to your left to a fallen branch near the base of what I suspect is a pitch pine tree. There, in what looks like the remains of a stump of a fallen tree, under branches, bark and leaves, you’ll find Angling For a Bite.

Please be stealthy and Please rehide well.

To return to your car, return to the perimeter loop path and either return the way you came or continue on and you’ll come to the meadow on your left and you can cut across there or continue further on the perimeter path to where it comes out by the bridge.

Happy Hunting!
