If you travel west on Highway 69 between Cordes Junction and Prescott Valley, you'll cross Big Bug Creek at least three times. One of the Bradshaw Mountains early prospectors, Theodore Boggs, settled on the banks of this sinuous creek, and soon the town of Big Bug was born. About a hundred people lived in the vicinity of the town and the camp. Big Bug's post office was established March 31, 1879 and discontinued March 31, 1910. Mining activity continues to this day, but not much remains of the original town.
The Big Bug Creek Letterbox is a drive-by. After you cross Big Bug Creek for the first time, start watching for the Milepost 268 marker. You'll see the Creekside Lodge and Cabins just past this marker, on the right-hand side of the road. Turn onto the lodge's entrance road and immediately turn left into the wide gravel area that runs between the highway and the Lodge's perimeter fence. You'll see Big Bug Creek's second iteration just ahead.
Three concrete deer gaze serenely at you from behind the Lodge's fence. From the deer, take 20 steps toward the creek; you'll see a huge piece of concrete just inside the fence. To the right of that is a stack of big boulders. The letterbox is hidden under a little cairn of rocks, outside the fence and in front of the stack of big boulders. One of the rocks in the cairn is a beautiful pinkish quartz. Make sure to return it to the pile so others can find it easily!
