From Carpinteria State Beach to the hidden stamp at the Harbor Seal Preserve Overlook is approximately 2.5 miles round trip. Seals and sea lions can be seen in the area from December through May.

Free parking is available along Linden Avenue, but times are restricted. Carpinteria State Beach offers parking in a lot for a fee.

From the park’s main gate, head south through the Santa Cruz Campground, The Santa Rosa Campground and the San Miguel Campground. As you reach the end of the last parking area, look for the Carpenteria Coastal Vista Trail continuing through the park along the railroad tracks. The trail is suitable for pedestrians or bikes. You’ll soon pass a kiosk on the left with information about the Tar Pits Park and all it has to offer. Continue along the trail enjoying the views and passing the large commercial pier on the right.

Look for the information board along the right side of the trail dedicated to the Harbor Seal, which also marks a smaller path that breaks off toward the water. Follow this path to the Harbor Seal Preserve Overlook for a great view down onto the small pocket beach containing the Harbor Seal Preserve. From December 1st through May 31st this portion of the beach is for seals-only. Humans may quietly watch the boisterous colony, sometimes numbering as many as 150 seals, from this blufftop observation area above. The Carpenteria Harbor Seal Colony is one of only four on the Southern California Coast, so please be respectful of their space and steer clear of the pocket beach below during this time of year.

After returning to the main Trail, face the Harbor Seal information board and look for the large rock to the left. The stamp is tucked under the rock in the grasses on the left side. Please try to be discrete as the trail and overlook can be a popular area.
