Adult
1. Start at the doormat on the front porch, facing Broadway High School.
*John Kline built his house in 1822 and it is in very good condition for its age; the windows are the original ones installed almost 200 years ago.
2. Walk toward the maple tree to your right, first walk forward until you step on the sidewalk, then turn slightly to your right and walk forward about 14 feet.
3. From the maple tree, face the garden and walk around it clockwise until you reach a white outbuilding.
4. When you reach the building, enter through the front door and note the antiques, but be respectful of the objects.
*John Kline was a pacifist farmer and doctor during the Civil War, and he requested exemption from military service for the Brethren and Mennonites.
5. Now exit the house through the same door, and walk around the house away from the chimney until you reach the cistern.
6. From there, walk downhill until you are parallel to the last pine tree and the corner of the building.
7. Next, jump the creek and squeeze between the tree and the side of the building.
8. Follow the creek downhill until you reach a walnut tree, then walk uphill to reach the clothesline.
9. Walk between the house and a brown shed, and note the herb garden on your left. *John Kline was a herbal doctor during the Civil War, so he used many of the herbs to treat both Union and Confederate soldiers.
10. Continue in the same direction until you reach the woodshed, then circle around it to the lower right corner.
11. From that point, walk downhill and to your left until you arrive at a long, white painted outbuilding.
*Although the Kline family owned and operated a farm and lived in the South during the Civil War, John Kline spoke out against slavery and owned no slaves on his farm.
12. Enter through the middle door and then go through the second door on your left into the left half of the shed.
13. Now, scale the fence and figure out what all the old machinery and tools were.
14. Walk toward the dividing wall between the two halves of the shed, and open the corn bin, which is sitting against the wall.

Kids’ Clues
1. Start at the front door of the house and skip around the house to your left, past a walnut tree.
2. Stop when you reach a swing and swing on it for a minute or two.
3. When you are finished swinging, get off of the swing and face away from the house, then walk backwards until you step on a cement pathway.
4. Now, pretend you are a soldier and about-face to your left.
5. Then march to the herb garden in front of you and find where the catnip grows.
6. After that, walk along the garden until you find an herb called verbascum, but don’t pick any of the plants growing in the garden.
7. Now, count how many different herbs there are growing beyond the verbascum.
8. When you reach the brown shed, find the clothesline on the other side of it and run along that clothesline until you reach the end.
9. From there, imagine what other kids could have done with the big old tree in front of you.
10. Now, run to the white building that is past the old tree and go inside.
11. Count how many boards there are holding up the ceiling, then go outside through that same door and take the same number of steps as there were boards around the house to your left.
12. Then, squeeze between the chimney and the tree and climb down the bank until you are standing next to the stream.
13. Make a giant leap across the stream, then sneak down beside it like Daniel Boone would have.
14. Sneak to the droopy willow tree, then make 15 giant steps downstream.
15. Cross the creek by jumping the rocks and landing on the big flat rock on the other side.
16. Crawl through the grass like a bear downhill to a big tree stump.
17. Look towards the woodshed and run halfway there, to the tree that is in your way.
18. Run around the tree and sing Ring-Around-The-Rosie as you do.
19. Now stop at the pile of rock by the tree and put your back against the tree trunk.
20. Ride your imaginary horse to the shed in front of you, and enter through the side opening, the only door big enough to get your horse through.
21. Now tie up your horse and find it a place to eat.
22. Pretend the wooden box against the wall is a treasure chest, open it and you have found your treasure!
Just for fun- go into the other half of the shed and count how many bird nests you can find.
