Harrisonburg, VA 22807
1. Head southwest on Bluestone Dr toward Port Rd/Port Republic Rd
2. Turn left at Port Rd/Port Republic Rd
3. Turn left to merge onto I-81 N toward Winchester
4. Take exit 251 for US-11 toward Harrisonburg
5. Keep right at the fork to continue toward US-11/N Valley Pike and merge onto US-11/N Valley Pike
6. Turn right at Fellowship Rd/Rte-721
7. You will see a wooden building with a graveyard behind it. Either you park on the gravel road near in it or park in front of it.

Adult Clues

Clue #1 - In 1869, the land was deeded and the community started. Where would you find this information at the site?
Did you know? – Zenda was named after a popular book in the 19th century. It was also called ‘Little Africa’ or ‘Athens’.
Clue #2 – Follow the gravel path to the burial ground behind the church and go near the fence. Go to near the fence behind the church.
Did you know? - The church was also called ‘Athens Church’ instead of Long’s Chapel, which was named after its builder.
Clue #3 – Find the place where the two Richardson infants are buried.
Did you know? – Long’s Chapel Church was not only just a church; it was a burial ground and a school.

Clue #4 – Go back to the gravel path and find the gravestone where no man is buried.
Did you know? – Zenda’s school drew students from as far away as Keezletown.
Clue #5 – Find the huge gravestone where a family of four are buried.
Did you know? – Long’s Chapel was completed by 1871.
Clue #6 - Find the gravestone in honor of a family of five.
Did you know? – Long’s Chapel was a segregated for black.
Clue #7 – Just like these families, find a bunch of trees to make one tree. There, you will find the letterbox.

Kids’ Clues:

~ ALL KIDS!!! Grab a parent for a fun story to learn about the history of Longs Chapel. You will start your hunt here at the sign.

*Fun Fact Flower number 1*- This church was not always known as Longs Chapel. It was once known as “Athens Church” or “Little Africa”.

~Once you and a parent have read the sign, go to the flag and say the Pledge of Allegiance.

*Fun Fact Flower number 2*- The Zenda school had students who lived as far away as Keezletown.

~Find the headstone that says- “Died March 21 1898”

*Fun Fact Flower number 3*- Zenda got its name from a popular 19th century novel.

~Now, skip back down the lane until you see the headstone with the dove on it. Please don’t touch the plants.

*Fun Fact Flower number 4*- It was a church for only black people.

~Go over to the bigger stone on the left. This headstone is for two people. From that stone, watch where you’re going, and skip to a stone that says “JACKSON” This stone is for more than two people. It’s for a family of five.

*Fun Fact Flower number 5*- Long’s Chapel was built by 1871.

~From there, take the gravel road (Watch for cars!) then bunny hop all the way to the rock, three small stones ahead on the right. Sit on it and sing your ABC’s.

*Fun Fact Flower number 6*- Long’s Chapel was not just a church. It was a school and a burial ground as well.

~Get up, spin 3 times and walk to the four trees that look like a hand with no thumb coming out of the ground. Look for “Little Africa’s box”.
