This is the third installment in our Animal Prints Series. There will be 6 series for a total of 18 letterboxes. Enjoy the hunt!

HOW TO GET HERE: Travel from the North, South, East or West to the light on Main Street intersecting Clay Street and Union Street., Thomaston, CT. At this intersection you want to have the US Post Office and Town Hall/Opera House on your right and Webster Bank & Thomaston Savings Bank on the left. Head South on Main Street onto South Main (heading toward Waterbury), at the 2nd light which is the intersection of South Main and state Route 254 take a right onto Route 254. Take the first left onto Marine St. (House on your left has wood fence with “Beware of Dogs” signs.) Continue straight keeping the Stone Building on your left and go up the hill into Hillside Cemetery. In the cemetery there is a 4-way intersection, keeping the second smaller stone structure on you left, turn right on the paved road where you can see the Trail Head at the end of the paved cemetery road. Park anywhere off the road so other cars can get by.

The whole trail is about 1.25 miles, uphill with a couple of wet spots and a couple of downhill places to take carefully. Bring your clues, stamp, ink pad, water, a snack, compass & tape measure. Spray well with insect and tick repellant.

START AT THE TRAILHEAD: (HINT: Count the Wildlife Safety Zone (WSZ) signs as you walk the trail.)

Walk uphill on “Orange” trail until you reach the 2nd Wildlife Safety Zone (WSZ) sign. Look at the Walnut or Shagbark Hickory growing around an old barbed wire fence. Continue uphill, walk past an Ash tree on the right where about 5’ of bark was damaged and the tree healed around the injury. At the 3rd WSZ sign on a 3 sister tree clump with barberry at the base you will find a print of a Human in a hole in the center of the 3 tree clump. Cover well when done.

As you continue walking up the trail you will pass a clearing on your left. Continue straight on “Orange”. Passing a 4th WSZ sign, a 5th WSZ sign, then a 3 sister tree on your left downhill to a more level area with a springtime, wet weather, mud hole. At the end of the cliff on right trail side go to the twin sister tree and sight 255° to a 3’ stump and then a triangle shaped opening made by two large stones in the cliffs on left trail side. Go about 35 steps to the stump and another 10 steps uphill to the triangle opening. The print of a Tiger is hiding there. Tigers are not native to the USA so the only place to see one is in a zoo.

When you come to a “Y” of “Yellow” left and “Orange” straight, turn left onto “Yellow” Continue on “Yellow” walking through lots of Mountain Laurel which feels like a gateway to the letterbox. You will come to a yellow blaze with metal straight ahead arrow about 7’ off the ground. Take 10 steps to a dead tree with a small round woodpecker hole that is across the trail. Step over the dead tree, then look ahead about 15’ on left @ base of 2 fallen trees, parallel to the trail. Look under the root end to find the print of a Mouse. Maybe the fox was looking for a mouse for dinner.

This part of the series is now complete. You may continue on the trail or turn around and go back down hill. Either way will bring you back to the trail head and your parked vehicle. We hope you enjoyed the hunt for animal prints, the trail, listening to the birds and seeing the wildflowers.

Please log your find at Letterboxing.org and/or Atlasquest.com. Thank you.
