Rochester is a sleepy little town in Western Racine County about 20 minutes northeast of Lake Geneva and 30 minutes southwest of Milwaukee. "Rochester was established in 1836, after the end of the Black Hawk War opened the area to white settlement. It is thought that James Hathaway, a land surveyor, named the area "Waukeeshah" (meaning fox in Potowatomi) but settlers from New York persisted in calling their new town "Rochester" after their old home in New York, and Rochester it became."
(Thanks to the Burlington Historical Society for this information.)

The beauty of living in Rochester is that there are many quaint shops and locations to visit. One of my favorite, as a teacher, is the Rochester Public Library. Situated at the top of a hill west of the river at the corner of W. Main St. and W. Spring St., the library may be small, but it is the epicenter for many community events and gatherings. Your treasure is sitting on the shelves waiting to be found.

Books are great to curl up with under a shade tree on a warm, summer afternoon. Fill in the common names of these shade trees. (Hint: These are all from a list of Wisconsin trees on the uwgb.edu website.)

1. Fraxinus americana _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (7th letter)
2. Juglans nigra _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (11th letter)
3. Populus grandidentata _ _ _-_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (9th letter, don't count the hyphen)
4. Acer rubrum _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (6th letter)
5. Ulmus americana _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (10th letter)
6. Prunus serotina _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (8th letter)
7. Gleditsia triacanthos _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (11th letter)
8. Quercus alba _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (6th letter)
9. Pyrus communis _ _ _ _ (2nd letter)

Go to the circulation desk and ask for a book being held for: _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
(You may think the last letter should be an N to spell a more common name, but the one you have is correct.)

Feel free to peruse the shelves when you are done stamping in. This library is in the Lakeshores Library System/WAVE Consortium which means that if you live in southeast Wisconsin, your library card will likely work here, but you can return books to your local branch in the system. Very cool!
