Unfortunately, this series has been retired, due to the poor state of this park. I have removed the stamps and will replant in another location.

This is my first letterbox series and I was aided by my daughter Musical Mariah and amazing friend and letterbox extrordinair, Tea Bass. Hopefully there will be more to come.

The Book of Kells is an illuminated manuscript, in Latin, of the four Gospels of the New Testament. Transcribed by Celtic monks in about 800 A.D. it includes human, animal and mythical beasts together with celtic knots and interlacing patterns in vibrant colors, along with masterful western calligraphy. The artistry is unparalleled, incredibly inticate and took 75 years to complete. It is widely regarded as Irelands national treasure. (I did use simple examples)

Location: Birch Plain Creek Park, Thomas Road, City of Groton, CT

When you are driving into the park note the painted rock on the right side of the entrance and as you park there is a painted rock that looks like a dog face on the left side. Please be careful of poison ivy off the trails. We were careful not to hide boxes where we noted any.

The Book of Kells - Animals
Box 1- Snakes
Enter the trail next to the small kiosk and be sure to grab a map/trail guide. Walk along the graveled path until you come to a t-intersection. Turn right along the more travelled route and follow shortly to the next intersection where you will go left. Follow this to the next intersection and again turn right along the more travelled trail. Just before you get to the "animal blind" #1 used to observe marsh wildlife, note the twin sister on your right. Your prize is located behind this tree covered with sticks and leaves and a moderate size rock. Rehide and check out the osprey, cranes, hawks and ducks resident here.

Box 2 - Boar
Retrace you steps back to the intersection, turn left following your way back to the next intersection. Here you will turn left and follow for a short distance to a trail on your right with a very interesting twisted vine on your right. Take this dead end trail until you see the naked indian. Facing the indian note the large boulders a few steps down. (Don't go all the way down to the lower level). You can step down to the left just a few steps and find a cave in front of this large boulder on your right. Your prize will be in this cave behind a rock. Rehide well, turn and return to the main trail.

Box 3 - Bird
At the main trail turn right and follow past the "animal blind" #2. (Check out this area. Behind the "blind" is a short unmarked trail toward the water. Careful of the poison ivy but I saw some cranes in the tall grass here.) Continuing along the trail a short distance until you spot two large trees, one on each side of the trail. Bushwack right toward the boulders. Spot a tree on your right with a "black dot". Take a compass reading of 250 degrees and take 12 steps. Turn right and face the boulder. Under some rocks at this boulder is your prize. Rehide well and continue on the main trail.

Box 4 - Fish
Continue on this trail past #6 until you come to an intersection. There is a large boulder in front of you with the trail end on your right. To the left of this boulder is an unmarked trail leading to the waters edge. Follow this trail 15 steps and stop and note the large 4 trunk tree on your right. Go to this tree around the back and your prize is nestled waist high among the trunks. Rehide snuggley. Gotta love the tree roots at the waters edge. Return to your car up the hill. Hope you enjoyed this series.
