Notice: it has been reported to us that there's been a fire in this area and the 'box couldn't be found in August 2011. It was also reported not findable from a reliable source in August of 2012. so we're calling it missing. So sorry. But it's still a really cool place to visit--a one-of-a-kind chapel you won't want to miss!

Placed by Doublesaj (Old Blue couldn't make it. . .) on July 10, 2003. This is the third box in the Zodiac series including the Aries box in Napa, Ca and the Taurus box in Soquel, Ca near Santa Cruz.

The Northern Coast of California is pitifully barren when if comes to letterboxes! Although the drive there can be a challenge, albiet a brethtakingly beautiful one, this box is an easy climb through a forrested area, a couple hundred feet from the parking lot. So, if you're traveling to the towns of Mendocino, Fort Bragg or The Sea Ranch, each of which holds wonderous coastal-type bounty, please take the time to visit this amazing little chappel.

South of the coastal town of Gualala, California on highway 1, lies The Sea Ranch, a 3500 acre, environmentally sensitive community of about 1800 homes. On the east side of the highway, 4.8 miles north of The BIG Sea Ranch sign (or 3.5 miles south of the town of Gualala) stands The Sea Ranch Chapel, dedicated to the memory of an unnamed young man, artist and natualist who believed that "art is the intermediary between the physical and the spiritual." This tiny chapel with its ruffle of a roof, (echoing a nearby windswept tree) and accented with copper, stained glass windows and doors, mosaic inlaid shells and crowned with a bronze spire, was designed and created by James Hubbell.

While I encourage you to enter this amazing place, the letterbox resides elsewhere on the hill behind this chapel. Park in the parking lot and proceed past the partial stone fence, the trickling, winged fountain and the stained glass doors, up the 2 stone steps and the 5 wooden ones embedded in the grass to a lightly trodden path. Follow the fence line up the hill to the end post. Journey on the other side of the fence, straight uphill, due east, at least 70 paces (right, left, right, left = one, two, three, four) through this forrested place and come to rest at a manzanita tree, dwarfed by surrounding pines (though a goodly 15 feet tall.) Behind and at the base of this tree, hidden in a tumble of tall grass and fallen leaves, find yur prize.

Note: A short distance in either direction of this chappel is a campground area, numerous bluff trails, sandy and rocky seashore access, seafood restaurants, hotels and bed and breakfasts in many price ranges. Enjoy!
