Well the “Puppy Princess” letterbox is the first letterbox planted by our youngest daughter, as you can probably guess from the name. When asked, “Where do you want to plant your letterbox?” she said, “Near the Zoo!”. After looking around there for a while, we could not find a place that was not over run by tourists and people, so we went on a short drive and quickly came across the Diamond Head state monument park. To find it go up Diamond Head Road Between Makapu'u Avenue and 18th Avenue. It is open daily between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m if you want to go on the hike (highly recommended as long as you are not claustrophobic or out of shape, as the trail is all up hill, and there is a long tunnel towards the end that you have to pass through.)

However, to find this letterbox you don’t even have to enter the main park area.
Before you get to the tunnel into the park area (and therefore before you have to pay $5 for parking) there is a small turnout on the left side of the road. Pull in there for free parking and get ready for a quick little hike. On the right side of the parking lot (as you look out towards the water, and away from Diamond head, you will see a sign that says, “Closed Area, No Hiking, No Camping”. Boldly pass by this sign and look for the trail that leads into the grass, around the side of the hill behind the tree. Don’t worry, it is a very short hike.

Follow the trail up to the first clearing. Take in the view and turn around to your right to face uphill. A short way up you will see another tree on the left side of the trail. This is where the letterbox is planted right at the base of the tree. It is covered and hidden, so dig around. If you get high enough on the trail that you can see where you parked your car, you have gone too far.

*** UPDATE 4/9/2011 *** After being found well over 25 times, poor puppy princess’s book was all full. We gave it a visit and replaced the log book with a fresh one ready to meet all the new visitors. It has been wonderful getting notes from all of the people who found this great location. Be sure to replant it carefully where heavy rains will not wash it away, as it is on the side of an extinct volcano. Enjoy!
