Directions to Kellogg Environmental Center:
From Rte. 8 (North and South)
- take exit 15
- at end of ramp, turn left onto Main St. (Rte. 34)
- continue West on Rte. 34 for about 1.5 miles
- take a right onto Lakeview Terrace (there is a sign for Kellogg Center at the corner)
- continue to stop sign at the end of the road
- turn left at stop sign, parking lot is on your left.

Trail map can be found at http://www.ct.gov/dep/lib/dep/stateparks/maps/osbogis.pdf

Head Northeast out of the parking area and cross at the crosswalk to the field entrance. Stay to the right and go over the wooden bridge and around to the other side of the pond. Proceed very slowly and keep your distance if there are geese, they will eventually wander into the pond or the field if you give them time. The Red winged black birds will fly overhead to chase you away during nesting season but are harmless. Staying to the right you will go up a short steep hill and out into a field with a four way mowed intersection. Go left at the intersection and walk to the trailhead. Go left and enter the red trail.

Box 1, Storm trooper.

Follow the trail for a ways, passing a footbridge on your left till you come to a small stream, usually there are a few boards in place to walk on. Cross the stream and go forward 4 paces. Site 50 degrees on your compass and walk 20 paces to a small pile of boulders. Box 1 (Storm trooper) is located somewhere in the pile.

Box 2, X-Wing Squad.

After replacing the box, continue on the red trail. The trail will wind uphill and then flatten out for a bit and you will come to a fork in the trail. A trail leads uphill to the left, and a wooden bridge heads off to the right, take the trail going uphill to the left. The trail winds for a ways and passes very close to the road and some houses at one point, stay on the trail. As you pass over a break in a stone wall, stop and site 150 deg to a break in another wall. At the break is box #2 (X-Wing Squad insignia).

Box 3, Yoda

After replacing the box continue on the red trail around some turns, then up and up passing over some white quartz underfoot. You will pass a large boulder perched at the top and the trail will flatten out while you work your way through a thicket of mountain laurel. The trail takes a 90 degree right turn and passes through another rock wall on it way to a paved section taking you up into some pasture. The road turns to dirt and takes a 90 degree left turn, a short ways after you will stay to the right and follow a trail across two of the fields and continue back into the woods. After a short walk into the woods, you will come to the yellow trail, follow it to the right. You will pass a very large Oak tree on the left, then another large, old, hallowed out Oak on the right. As you continue you will walk over a large rock in the trail with a symbol painted on it, the symbol looks like a cross with a C in each corner.

This is a simplified version of a structure from the coat of arms of Serbia. Quite common as a graffiti sign in Europe during the first years of the 1990s. Stand atop the symbol and site 310 degrees on your compass, you will see a V shaped tree. Take 2 steps forward on the trail and a tree just in the background should line up in the V, Yoda is hiding behind the tree in the old rock wall!

Box 4, Darth Vader.

After re-hiding Yoda, continue down the trail till it intersects another and take the downhill route. You will pass a larger set of sister trees on your left as the trail begins to steepen. On your way you will pass through a stone wall and continue down. At “14” you will reach another stone wall, pass through and don’t get wet. You will come to the bridge you avoided on your way to box 2, stand in the center of the bridge, site 60 degrees and proceed to the split boulder. Hiding here is the final box of this series.

After stamping and replacing, cross the bridge. Going left will lead you back to the trailhead where you came in.

If you find all the boxes please feel free to email r4d2@snet.net with any comments, suggestions, and box conditions. We would love to hear from you.

11/2010 updated box 3 details as Yoda has been moved about 15ft to a more secure location in the wall. Hiked this today, replace the Notepads and checked the inkpads!
